Born 29 January 1935 in Staniewicze on the Niemen River, on a small country estate. Her parents had a 30 hectare farm which was requisitioned from them after the war. Her father worked on a collective farm. When she was 8 years old, Maria Poczobut moved to Grodno, and for 18 months after the war she attended the Polish Queen Jadwiga School. She left when the school was transformed into a Russian school. She graduated from an economic technical college. Maria worked as a book-keeper in a bank and in the military. She was not a Young Pioneer, nor a member of the Young Communist League or of the Party. For 27 years she has been a member of the Parish Church choir in Grodno and is a Church community worker. She is a member of the Association of Poles.
