Born in the village of Staniewicze in the Wejsmonty parish in 1930. His father, a wealthy farmer, was a village leader; his mother was a folk healer (she treated people, delivered babies). During World War II his brother was killed in Warsaw in the Warsaw Uprising. The Soviets, when establishing a kolkhoz, took away his family’s land and livestock. Stefan Jodkowski had to stop learning to play the organ and started working as a construction worker. He became a sexton at the Franciscan Church in Grodno. He was also involved in efforts aimed at recovering the church taken away from the Sisters of the Holy Family of Nazareth in Grodno. The sisters recovered their church only in the 1990s. Stefan Jodkowski is now working at the church’s renovation.
