Born on 28 June 1936 in Tortschin (Zhytomyr Oblast, Ukrainian SSR). In 1937, her parents were arrested. Her father was soon executed by firing squad and her mother was deported to Kazakhstan, where she died of typhus in 1942. Walentyna Bals together with her three older siblings was looked after by her grandparents, her father’s parents. After their death she stayed with her oldest sister. She attended primary school at two neighbouring villages and finished forms 8-10 in the town of Volodarsk Volynskyi. She became a pastry cook and started working in Zhytomyr. Between 1964 and 1967 she lived in Krasnoyarsk. Now, she lives in Zhytomyr.
